Abstract
Triggering this thesis are the dramatic market changes in the oil and gas industry. Decreasing oil prices force the selected company to cut costs in order to stay competitive. The thesis therefore focusses on the optimization of crude oil transportation in the company. The process includes all procedures, starting at production, until the point of sales: transportation from the drill site to the base, processing, storage, loading of goods on to trains, transportation via train and unloading at the customer's refinery. For this optimization, value stream oriented process management has been chosen as framework, which combines the philosophy and tools of process management with the value stream design from lean management. The base hereby consists of the process management's management system. The process will be optimized in five steps: 1. differentiation of the process, 2. definition of the current state, 3. analysis of the current state, 4. definition of the future state and 5. definition of measures to achieve said future state. The main contribution of the value stream design is the visualization of the process. The definition of the current state, including the visualization, is therefore executed very close to the process (by way of line walks). As a result, rooms for improvements are easy to spot. These are then specified and the future state is defined, with consideration of the guidelines of the value stream designs. The objective of this thesis is the creation of a framework for the practical optimization, the analysis of the value stream, the development of alternative process procedures and steps, defining process costs and the initiation of the process optimization itself. The result is a list of improvements and a defined future state of the process. The responsibility of the conversion of said improvements into precise actions will therefore lie with the examined company.
