Abstract

The most common light-metals are aluminium, titanium and magnesium. Each of them has their benefits or rather drawbacks and based on these characteristics they are chosen for different engineering topics and machining solutions. But many of today’s engineering tasks aren’t catchable by only one metal. There is one possibility to combine two or more metals by roll cladding and use the synergy of their benefits. In this work the common magnesium alloy (AZ31) und the 1050-aluminium alloy are bonded by roll cladding. Thereby the aluminium sheet has the challenge to protect the easy-oxidant magnesium-base from environmental impact and subsequent corrosion attack. Magnesium is about 30 % lighter then aluminium and based on its hexagonal closed packed crystal structure it is much more difficult to forming at room temperature. The face centre cubic aluminium has already at room temperature enough sliding systems for plastic deformation and forming at low temperature is not a big deal. One aim of this work is to find out the best parameters for the rolling process and optimize the fabrication of the compound. The analysed parameters are the pre-heating temperature, the temperature during the forming, the preparation of the metal surfaces and the reduction diameter of the plates, which cohere with the forming forces. The observational researches are supplemented by use of different lubrication and the assessment of other relevant system factors. The quality of a roll clad sheet is defined by the bounding strength in the interface zone between the magnesium and the aluminium sheets. Therefore different testing methods were implemented. The composition and the building-up of the bounding-zone between the magnesium and the aluminium sheets have great impact on the final result of the roll cladding process. There are different ways to analyse these characteristics: optical microscopy, three dimensional analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro hardness analysis. In the final section of this work, the mechanical abilities of the compound are tested and with attention to the further usage of the material, some specific values for plate deformation are discovered. With attention to the former application areas of the compound, the optimal parameters and the largest possible window for the manufacturing of semi-finished goods are pictured.
