Abstract
In this study the strength, modulus of elasticity and porosity of vitrified grinding wheels, depending on the type and time of storage were investigated. The storage took place in both a container and in a bag, storage times had the following values: 0h, 2h, 6h, 12h, 24h and 48h. Then, the masses were pressed into cylinders, dried and burned. For the individual specimens green strength, compressive strength after drying, compressive strength after firing, bulk density, Young's modulus, porosity and density according to Pukall were determined. The samples showed a density between 2.07 to 2.11 g/cm3 and a porosity of between 39% -43.8%. The lowest porosity was measured at recipe 14 and the maximum porosity measured in recipe 4. The samples showed Young's modules between 21% and 36%. The lowest modulus was measured for recipe 14 and the highest for the recipes four and five. The investigations of the strength show that recipe 5, in comparison to all other formulations at each storage period, is always showing very good strength. The highest green strength of 1.66 MPa was achieved with variation R6 at container storage with a storage period of 48h, the highest strength after drying of 15MPa with variation R5 for container storage with a storage period of 6 hours and the maximum strength after firing of 107.3MPa with variation R6 in bag storage at a storage time of 2 hours.
