    Abstract

As most of the 234 existing contaminated sites in Austria are contaminated with more than 93 % of organic pollutants, there is a crucial need for encapsulation and remediation of these sites. Several in-situ methods are applicable for remediation without excavating of the polluted material. However, few are appropriate for hydrocarbon impacted areas. A new in-situ technique provides chemical oxidation of the organic pollutants in the contaminated soil while distributing the oxidant by electrokinetic means. The oxidant is generated by diamond electrodes and afterwards distributed by electrokinetic processes. Diamond electrode cells are made conductible by boron-doping. Hence they are able to synthesise strong oxidants. This master thesis contains information on the preparation and implementation of the new remediation method in a field trial. Emphasis was put on the production of peroxodisulfate and its mass balance in the treated soil. As the results of the samples indicated, there was an insertion of 2828 mmol of peroxodisulfate in the contaminated soil. The results also showed, that there was a distribution of peroxodisulfate in the soil. The field test proved that the remediation method is applicable to contaminated sites. However, there is still a need to conduct further research for this novel remediation method. To allure further findings, some more field tests should be conducted.
