Due to the increasing amount of plastic waste and todays narrow oil occurrence, the OMV AG Downstream Team is engaged in the analysis of the recovery potential of plastic waste since 2011. For this purpose, the OMV AG developed a process they call “ReOil”. In this process plastic waste is converted into a synthetic crude oil. The depolymerisation (ReOil) plant is linked to a refinery. To supply the plant with the needed feedstock (pre-sorted plastics) a wet mechanical waste treatment plant is required upstream. At the moment there is no infrastructure for it. To find suitable locations for these facilities, an extensive site search was transacted. The search included the survey of all relevant waste management facilities in the EU. With defined criteria, a selection of three locations was made for Austria (Vienna, Linz and Graz). The pre-sorted plastics should be transported as bales. Therefore, the possible means of transport (truck, train, river boat) got tested for their suitability. It was determined which of the researched bale shapes allow the best transport in terms of shipping volume and payload. With this information and the results from the site search, the possible means of transport could be compared with, regarding the factors of success: cost, quality, performance and flexibility.
