Abstract
Abstract Supply and Demand of Waste in Europe for Production of Subcoal® Pellets This Master Thesis has the objective to examine supply and demand of waste in Europe for production of Subcoal® Pellets. This thesis is based on the previous project thesis as part of the university program “recycling technology” at the Montanuniversität Leoben. The first part of the thesis covers the input market regarding available quantities, recycling rates, landfill and incineration. The country focus in the first part is generally on the EU28 level and in further detail in typical waste sourcing and fast developing countries like United Kingdom, Italy and Poland. Very interesting are the future predictions until 2030 regarding urban waste generation, recycling rate and material ending up in the landfill. The focus of the second part is the industry utilizing the alternative fuels, from established industries like cement, to newcomers such as lime and steel and high potentials like lignite and hard coal fired power plants. The examination of the European cement market is thorough with strong focus on Germany as high developed alternative fuel user, Poland as strong developing country and Spain as very low developed regarding alternative fuels. Furthermore the other industries steel, lime and power are examined as well. A very big challenge is to predict future scenarios, on the supply side and on the demand side, thus market balances and imbalances. The supply side, as already mentioned has many variables as waste generation, recycling rates, future landfill situation and capacity changes in waste to energy plants. The demand side for the cement industry can be predicted much easier than the steel and power industry, both being under price pressure on one side but very conservative in technology changes on the other side.
