Abstract
The aim of this diploma thesis was to perform failure analysis in accordance to VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure), guideline 3822, for three cases of damage. The first case deals with a damaged valve of a sprinkler system, which failed by a ductile fracture due to frozen water. The second case of damage deals with profiled steel tubes for agrotechnical applications, which failed at different load cycles during fatigue tests. The different numbers of cycles to failure are caused by different residual stress states, induced by the different manufacturing routes of the steel profiles. The third case study are broken steel parts, which are used as supports for plant components. The failure is a result of crack initiation during hot dip galvanization caused by liquid metal embrittlement.
