Abstract

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva is currently building the latest generation of particle accelerators, the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). It is housed in a circular tunnel of 27 km of circumference and a depth of 100 meters in average. Electrically induced fires in the LHC are a major concern, since an accident could present a threat to CERN personnel and the public as well as machine operation. However, the amount of electrical equipment in the underground area required for operation, supervision and control of the machine is essential. The present analysis is assessing the risk of fire due to faulty electrical equipment in both a qualitative as well as quantitative way. The recommendation following the qualitative analysis comprises the introduction of specially assigned fire protection zones in the underground area. Since problems concerning required data have arisen during the quantitative analysis, recommendations are given in view of more accurate results of follow-up examinations and re-analyses in the future.
