Abstract

The production of high technology products and products including critical raw materials is getting more and more important. During an initiative the European Commission has therefore classified a row of elements and raw materials on basis of their restricted availability and technological meaning as critical. For single critical raw materials it is known in which applications or in which products and product groups these are used today. However, in most cases it is not clear in which waste streams and amounts these are available concerning their recycling potential. Besides, an improved and optimised recycling system can make an essential contribution to raise the security for supplying the critical materials in future. In this paper qualitative and afterwards quantitative analysis for well-chosen relevant secondary material streams of critical raw materials or valuable materials should be done. Therefor primarily those products are examined in which these raw materials exist in significant amounts and have the potential to be re-extracted from in future upcoming waste streams as secondary raw materials. Outgoing from the generated data material current and forecasted projections on sales volumes, collection rates and population developments as well as forecasts for Austria will be provided. Therefore the potential amount of the predefined elements should be illustrated in well-chosen secondary raw material streams with a very high accuracy to be able to provide a valuable raw material map for 2030.
