Abstract

The task for this diploma thesis was defined by the production situation at EPCOS OHG in August 2007, specifically by its business division of multilayer technology, which is lo-cated in Deutschlandsberg (Austria) and Kutina (Croatia). Despite the usage of an ERP-system, the production control within this division was not transparent. This is the reason why the division lacked the opportunity of targeted access to the system of production. The individual work centers can be seen as practically capacity-driven and self-optimized, the consequence being that the processing of the lots was not based on a specific set of rules. This was the reason why initially the mean lead time was high and the lead time was characterized by a broad spread. Furthermore, there was no detailed analysis of the actual work in process (WIP) down to the work centers, which caused an additional fuzziness of the production. As a first step, it was necessary to establish production transparency by consistent lot monitoring in order to calculate the lot position and to gain a first approach of improve-ment. A new method of production control had to be created, in order to enable this vital lot monitoring. After that, the task was to reduce the spread and the lead time. An addi-tional controlling tool had to be created in order to generate the goals for the future, based on past and actual production ratios. Production control as well as controlling in combination with cybernetics form the theo-retical basis for the practical implementation. In addition, this practical chapter also shows considerable parallels to systems theory, which is also explained in order to adopt potential methods of solution. Therefore the most important control mechanisms of controlling are elaborated to get access to the key points of the process.
