Abstract

At present, fibre reinforced composite parts enjoy great popularity among automotive manufacturers. High mechanical properties combined with low mass often lead to an advantage of composites in comparison to metal in some parts of a car. However, plas-tics do have other requirements concerning construction and processing, saying that a direct substitution of a metal part by a composite part without consideration of the spe-cific criteria of the plastic material does not lead to an optimum, or might even be im-possible. This diploma thesis discusses the optimization of a sandwich-composite plate with fibre glass reinforced epoxy resins as upper layers concerning the optical appearance, more precisely the colour- and surface-quality in comparison to parts out of metal materials. For demonstrational issues, the hood of a SUV made by a German premiummanufac-turer was selected, although knowledge gained here might be transferred to other class-A-exterior parts with minor changes. Problems dealt with are local, intracellular buckling and outlining of core geometry, mi-cro bubbles in the matrix (porosity), outlining of fibre geometries, delamination and bubbles in the lacquer layers. At first, an overview of already established processes for surface improvements in mass production of plastic parts was created and their feasibility was evaluated. In a second step, the most promising processes were tested in some experimental series to make funded conclusions to their potential of improvement. In order to assess a possi-ble mass production monetarily, an economical view of the improvements was also accomplished. Although a persistent class-A-capable surface could not be achieved, a remarkable improvement of the appearance still was attained.
