Abstract
Dust explosions are still a hidden problem in the industry. Such explosions have big impacts due to massive demolition. There are many laboratory tests to investigate substances, which are potentially explosive. But in basic research there are many facts unknown related to the ignition process under non – atmospheric conditions. By using modern simulation techniques it is possible to investigate these facts and to do a parameter analysis. The simulation, in which a particle model was adapted, was set up in a case of a real laboratory test to compare the results of the simulation and the laboratory test. By using the simulation it was possible to determine the minimum ignition energy or the flame speed of a dust – air mixture. The benefit of the simulation tool is that it is also possible to simulate cases, which are not possible to investigate in laboratory tests. Due to the testing method, it is difficult to carry out experiments at high temperatures and pressures. Many parameters are only available in simulation, like particle velocities or particle effects.
