This master-thesis deals with the causes and impacts of humidity-inducted transport damages in the international container shipment. Based on an investigation of the main drivers for the occurrence of condensate in containers, the main target is to define and analyse preventive actions with respect to costs, handling, availability and environmental impacts. According to state-of-the-art technical literature and interviews with desiccant producers, a packaging producer and a test laboratory, the different influences in international shipments are elaborated. The main focus of this theoretical part is on the investigation of the container’s climate and the appearance of cargo and container sweat due to changing climatic aspects. The practical part analyses the current situation of SEMPERMED’s container transport and classifies the factors of influence with regard to current loading procedures. Based on these results, trials, concerning the investigation of moisture sources and the changes in temperature and relative humidity, take place at the production plants in Malaysia and Thailand and at a customer’s facility in Germany as well as in Wimpassing, Austria (Semperit). Data loggers are used for recording the relative humidity and air temperature during container transport. Results of these measurements also showed that moisture has a negative impact on the strength of corrugated boards, used as packaging material. Due to this, the used transport cartons have been tested according to a standardized BCT- testing procedure to define the sufficient dimension of the corrugated boards. All results of the measurements at the different plants, complemented by the laboratory test results are summed up to establish a moisture balance of container transport. The analysis of all tests shows that currently the use of reefer containers or shrink films are not feasible solutions for SEMPERMED. Due to the existing requirements (on costs, handling, availability and environmental impacts) the efficient application of desiccants and dunnage material in combination with container inspections and welldefined loading procedures are able to achieve a considerable improvement in minimising condensate damages.
