The aim of this master thesis was to investigate the feasibility of an entrained flow reactor for the production of glass melt. For this purpose, a literature study on existing research projects was performed. This consideration was carried out in a technical sense as well as from a business point of view. The focus was on the possibility to operate the melting unit with different energy sources and to use them combined as a hybrid heat source. Among other things, investigations were made into the glass raw materials to be used. Thermogravimetric analyses were implemented to obtain information about the chemical reactions taking place during the melting process and their kinetics. CFD simulations of the melting unit and the refine tank were carried out with the calculated energy requirement. The primary goal was to obtain a bubble-free glass melt. In order to estimate the energy consumption, the energy balance of the unit was calculated, taking into account both renewable and conventional energy sources. The examination of the economic feasibility was conducted with special attention to the energy costs. In order to ensure the legal feasibility of the project, the patent situation regarding existing projects was studied.
