Abstract

For reasons of production of petrochemical intermediates and associated mechanical recycling post- consumer plastics will be thermo- chemically converted in a refinery. The specific high quality feedstock, rich in polyolefins and polystyrene (POS- Flake), is generated from municipal and industrial waste. This processing takes place in decentralised plants close to the refinery. High plant availability should be guaranteed by suitable logistics and storage facilities. For economic and ecological reasons, reduction of the bulk density ensures a maximum loading capacity. Essential parameters for transport and discharge of the POS- Flakes from silos and bunkers are the bulk density as a function of the applied pressure and flow characteristics. Appropriate procedures for volume reduction (compacting) will be identified on the basis of laboratory experiments and a feasibility study. There are two possibilities for the compaction of POS- Flakes. On the one hand it is possible to compact the bulk good mechanically and on the other hand the waste material can be baled. The suitability of different transport systems (lorry, train and waterway transport) for bulk freight and bales as well as several storage types and the required space are determined. Knowledge of required volumes and space, the essential process equipment as well as the different storage types enables a technical and economic comparison of individual scenarios. Obtained results show that the desired bulk density for the different transport types can be achieved and a baling process for POS- Flake is technically possible. A high potential storage and logistic concept is bulk transport combined with centralised baling on side and additional delivery of bales from long-distance.
