Abstract

The aim of this thesis was the search for a suitable and wears reducing measure for the thread of a titanium hub, which extends the life of titanium wheel hubs in combination with steel wheel nuts. An extensive literature review regarding material wear reduction was carried out. Basically, three different methodical approaches were used and their potential has been compared with the others. After thorough research and by means of a cost-benefit analysis five variants were selected for various preliminary testing methods. Essentially, the preliminary gathering serves as information of ply adhesion, durability and loading capacity. The final test to realistically validate the life of the thread in the form of a wheel change on the test bench of Pankl Systems AG, was a reference hub made of titanium and the variant that showed the highest potential in the preliminary tests carried out. Finally, all results that emerge from the bench tests have been evaluated for their potential to for marketability.
