Abstract

This diploma thesis in the specialism of lore of damage done by mining, deals with the securing of the inactive mine at Hochleiten below the area of Marienhöhe. This mine was rediscovered after damaging events and yearlong surveys. Marienhöhe is a part of the community Maria Enzersdorf. The mine at Marienhöhe caused heated discussions in Austria since its securing as well as the financing were very controversial issues. Marienhöhe is a residential area where depressions started to occur in the 1990s for no apparent reason. Rumours claimed that there exists an abandoned mine underneath the area. As from the year 2000 enquiries for historical records and documents were initiated. However, none of these proved the existence of the mine. In this thesis, the author gives a detailed overview of the initial enquiries and the ensuing geologic surveys carried out between 2002 and 2005, up until the detailed exploration and securing of the gypsum mine Hochleiten discovered in 2005 which proves the mines existence. One focus of the thesis is put on the securing of the gypsum mine Hochleiten carried out in 2007. The author presents a comprehensive overview of theoretical aspects concerning damages done by mining and their causes, i.e. old, insufficiently secured mines. Additionally, other factors causing damages are taken into consideration, e.g. incorrectly drained roof water, etc. Furthermore, the author thoroughly describes the findings acquired in the exploration process, i.e. through exploration boreholes. This process involves borehole inspections with cameras, analyses of the video material and laser scanning of discovered cavities. These findings were ultimately used for the securing of the mine. Another focus of this thesis is the determination of geological risk zones. The relevant geological aspects and the aspects of the theory damage done by mining are both used to describe these zones. Finally, the author also describes the process of securing and filling of the mine and other cavities in the area.
