Abstract
The HOTDISC technology allows the application of raw sized substitute fuel (RDF) in the cement rotary kiln. Through mechanical conditioning of municipial solid waste (including commercial and industrial waste), it is possible to produce an appropriate mid-caloric substitute fuel which has so far been applied in fluidised bed incineration. This substitute fuel can be qualitatively improved through changes in the conditioning process, to utilize it through energetic recovery in cement kilns with integrated HOTDISC technology. A substance flow analyses simulates changes in mass and quality, because of the projected process changes in waste conditioning on a theoretic basis. In doing so there is a high correlation between the forecast of mass and quality, with the real data attained by the substance flow analysis carried out after realisation of the plant changes. According to the example of Saubermacher Dienstleistungs AGs splitting-plant, it can be shown that through this procedure planning realibility is increased, while economic risc is reduced considerably. Both substance flow analysis and operational experience confirm the applicability of the large-scale produced HOTDISC substitute-fuel, which is able to be produced from mixed municipal solid waste. From the point of waste management the produktion and energetic usage of the HOTDISC substitute fuel is more than just reasonable. This is easily demonstrated by the energy and CO2-balance, as well as by the economic analysis of mass flows, additional revenues and cost advantages. The rising international relevance of the HOTDISC technology and its increased application in combination with middle-caloric substitute fuel is to be expected.
