Abstract

In the course of the construction of a large-scale test apparatus for investigating flame propagation in dust/air mixtures, the present work describes the development of a dust input system, a measurement method for concentration measurement and an ignition system for the testing apparatus. The aim of this study is to allow the measurement of the laminar flame velocity using the ‘tube method’. The test plant consists of a vertical four-meter-high steel pipe with an inside diameter of 800 mm. As part of the planned test procedure, the dust to be tested should be brought into the system via the top section of the pipe and subsequently brought to explosion in the lowest section. In order to ensure a homogeneous distribution of dust, dust is brought in through four separate feed devices. An optical method for the continuous measurement of the dust concentration at the height of ignition is developed together with an ignition system causing the dust/air mixture to ignite.
