Abstract

The topic of this thesis is to connect lightweight design with bionics. A further condition is to use a new manufacturing technique, the selective-laser-melting. Selective-laser-melting, also referred to as 3D-printing, has a huge potential to enable lightweight design. The importance and significance of lightweight construction has grown bigger and bigger over the past few years. Therefore there are more opportunities for research and development in 3D-printing as well. A possible field of application is the automotive sector. At the beginning of the development process stands the question for the best lightweight strategy for future designs. Geometries should be optimized regarding to their bending- and torsional stiffness. Bamboo is a very light but strong and stiff construction material, which makes it a perfect model. An assumption is that the filigree inner structure of this grass helps to improve its mechanical properties under load. After the successful fabrication of several specimens, they should be tested and evaluated by typical testing methods like tensile test or torsion test. The next step is the comparison of the geometrical and mechanical properties. Finally there will be a finite element simulation to compare the results.
