Abstract

This master thesis deals with the identification of factors influencing the preparation of an efficient packaging solution within the logistics network of Sandivk Mining and Construction Materials Handling Gmbh & Co KG in Leoben, an industrial equipment manufacturer which is globally active in the project business. Due to the international foreign sourcing of the core and steel components of the offered machine types and the high related transportation and storage operations the packaging is an important success factor in the project execution. To ensure the global proper parts availability of the requested time of use and the required quality, an application specific packaging solution must be guaranteed. Accordingly within the course of this work five main factors influencing the packaging design were identified, which were clarified by the existing congruence of theory-based features and practical knowledge. These are the product-specific property of the component, the place of installation of the component, the predominate storage devices at site, the required storage time and the chosen transport mode. The investigation of these factors was carried out by inclusion of specific know-how and expertise within the Sandivk A-suppliers which were based on a merchandise category ABC analysis in advance. Through selective analysis and evaluation of the five factors an obvious influence by the individuality of each project setup was identified. This situation leads to the development of a project-specific packaging data sheet based on the identified factors as basis of a future packaging directive. Sandvik Mining and Construction Materials Handling Gmbh & Co KG will use this possibility of holistic information acquisition in terms of the various project-related variable influences in order to integrate the packaging as a key success factor in project implementation.
