Abstract

This thesis deals with the investigation of the influence of fluid flow on refractory corrosion by slags. Refractory corrosion takes place diffusion-controlled and therefore may be described by Ficks 1st law. For application of this law the boundary layer thickness or the ratio of diffusion coefficient and boundary layer thickness, the mass transfer coefficient, has to be known. For this reason the work aims the determination of these quantities. Dynamic methods for testing the slagging-resistance of refractories the rotary slagging test and the rotating disc test as well as a gas purged steel ladle were investigated. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations were performed to assess the refractory/slag mass transport depending on several influencing factors especially on process parameters. The following procedure was conducted: -Characterization of the prevailing conditions -Determination of influencing factors on refractory/slag mass transport -Conduction of a dimensional analysis to determine relevant dimensionless numbers -Performing a parameter study with the help of CFD calculations considering diffusion -Establishment of an equation quantifying corrosive mass transfer The dimensionless equations describing mass transfer for the selected cases enable to measure the refractory corrosion depending on influencing parameters. In combination with experimental wear measurements a weighting of the wear contributing mechanisms corrosion and erosion is possible. CFD simulation is an established approach analyzing metallurgical processes. The present investigations showed that numerical calculations may be used successfully to gather information relevant for refractory wear, too.
