Effect of screening media selection on screening performance

The objective of this project was to quantify differences in screening accuracy between WX1000 wire mesh and Sandvik WX6000 rubber media, to increase knowledge of these media and to verify the factor J when calculating and selecting screening media with the simulation software PlantDesigner used within Sandvik. Background Crushing and screening is a part of the production process in both mining and construction. Screening is performed to separate desirable from undesirable materials. Sandvik’s PlantDesigner is a program used to create process simulations of crushing and screening plants. The formula for calculating screening capacity used in PlantDesigner includes 12 different parameters: Qthrough = Qnominal x A x B x C x D x E x F x G x H x I x J x K x L The factor J in table 1 describes the operation’s screening capacity depending on the type of screening media used. This project performed tests to compare the capacity factors J of WX1000 and WX6000 screening media. Test Run A test run was performed at a Sandvik test plant located in Dalby in southern Sweden. This new test method was designed with the support and guidance of Elna Hovén and Mats Malmberg to be appropriate for both this test and future activities. Analyses of the samples were performed at the Sandvik crushing laboratory located in Svedala, Sweden. Result With a separation of 8 mm, screening with the WX1000 wire mesh required only 86% of its screen area to produce results with the same screening efficiency as that of the WX6000 tensioned rubber medium. To calculate the devices’ screening capacities with Sandvik’s PlantDesigner, the J factor, used to describe different types of screening media, was 1,0 for the WX1000 wire mesh and 0,8 for the WX6000 mesh. The results have convinced the product department to complement the test and add other types of screening media to future test runs. Recommendations •The proposed and tested method works and can be used for future test runs. •The apertures of future test media should be approved by a project manager. •The design of the hooks in polymer cloths should be adjusted to avoid the overrun of fine particles. •Additional test runs should be performed at lower capacities and/or larger apertures to obtain additional values. •No adjustments to the factors are recommended based on the results of this test. •Rubber media should be selected for applications that focus on their life spans or the risk of a user overloading the screen
