Abstract
This thesis is about analyzing the effects of microwave irradiation on the cuttability of hard rocks. Tests have been performed combining microwave irradiation of granite with 30 kW and tests on a linear cutting test rig. The results show a reduction of cutting forces by 10% when cutting sections of the rock specimen that were microwave treated compared to untreated parts. Further analysis will have to involve an investigation of the specific energy consumption, breakage characteristics and excavated volume.
