Abstract

For manufacturing highly qualitative injection moulded parts often mirror-finished cavities are required. Since the quality of the finish is reflected in the quality of the moulded part, inspection and characterization of the surface quality are essential. Although a few common roughness parameters are used, no general guideline has been determined so far. The main aim of this work was to find a set of surface parameters, consisting of roughness-, waviness- and gloss-parameters, which allows a significant distinction and characterization of finished surfaces. Furthermore, the differences resulting from different finishing strategies as well as the quality of reproduction of finishes on injection moulded parts should be examined. In the frame work of the PCCL-project 3.2 (Reproducible manufactured surface structures and qualities of injection moulded parts) discoidal mould-inserts were made of 2 plastic-mould-steels (Böhler M333 and W300) and finished using 6 finishing strategies. The finishes were measured by using a white-light-interferometer, an atomic-force-microscope and a reflectometer and reproduced by injection moulding (PC, PP). The moulded parts surfaces were examined identically. 7 essential waviness- and 2 x 6 roughness-parameters were found and combined to 3 quality-parameters. In combination with the gloss-parameter it is possible to characterize the examined finishes, to distinguish significantly between them and to compare them with the moulded parts surfaces.
