Abstract

Forces and signals of hydraulic applications are transmitted by pressurized fluids. Currently rubber hoses reinforced by steel wires are an established solution in such an environment. Due to pressure loading of the hydraulic hoses a complex state of stress can be generated causing various kinds of damage to the material. Existing research by Semperit Technische Produkte GmbH proposed a damaging mechanism, where loads at high frequencies can lead to a growth of radial cracks. This thesis verifies this hypothesis by experiments carried out on the specimen and component level to provide additional information on the impact of different testing conditions and loadings. By using monotonic (tensile test) as well as dynamic test methods, the influence of different temperatures and loading rates on the component behavior was analyzed. High loads and frequencies occurring in the field were simulated by using the time-temperature-shift principal. Another essential factor for the characterization of the dynamic component behavior is the glass transition temperature. This temperature was determined through dynamic mechanical analysis on the component as well as on the material of the inner tube of the hose. Additionally, also the component behavior and damaging mechanisms of the rubber-steel-compound under a long term dynamical load were determined. With three different methods (dynamic mechanically analysis of the inner tube under tension and compression as well of the component under tension) a glass transition temperature of -40 °C was determined. Varying the temperature in this zone as well as by the use of different loading rates the aim of this thesis, to create radial cracks on the component, was achieved. This confirms the hypothesis of a crack growth caused by a glass-like solidification of the inner tube.
