To meet the increasing demands of the motorcycle industry, this master thesis deals with the selection of materials and manufacturing processes for the components of the motorcycle chassis. The differences between motorcycle types and chassis concepts are shown in a broad literature research. The chassis components are described and analysed regarding their loads and requirements. An overview of the commonly used materials and production processes is given. Based on VDI-standard 2221, the detailed evaluation of materials and production processes takes place in four phases. In these phases material requirements are determined, preselections are performed by use of material selection charts, materials and production processes are compared and alternative materials and suitable production processes are given. The results of stiffness measurements of various motocross motorcycles with aluminium and steel frames are discussed. With regard to deformation- and load-oriented structures, material indices are defined to minimize mass and costs. With these, it was shown that the material substitution of steel with aluminium or magnesium alloys can result in a significant reduction of mass by constant rigidity and strength. The mass reduction requires an adjustment of the cross section and results due to higher material prices in increased costs. Stiffness measurements of various frames proofed that frames out of aluminium can be stiffer than those made of steel. However, mass reductions on the entire vehicle could not be proven.
