The company "KAMIG“ Österreichische Kaolin- und Montanindustrie Aktiengesellschaft Nfg. Komm.Ges., headquartered in Perg/Upper Austria and founded in 1922, produces high-quality kaolin concentrates for a wide range of industrial applications. So far, the raw materials have been supplied by the company's own deposit in Kriechbaum, but this will be depleted in the next few years. In order to continue its business activities, the management of “KAMIG” forces the evaluation of two new potential sources of raw material. These are the process tailings (the so-called "Schlicker") stored on the extensive open pit mining site in Kriechbaum and the "Punz" deposit cropping out in the Mistlberg nearby. “Schlicker” is a secondary raw material, while the “Punz” deposit is a primary one. The investigations started with a careful evaluation of available literature and archive data, which was then used to estimate the existing reserves and composition of the potential raw material sources. Afterwards, the current state of the existing processing plant in Kriechbaum was analyzed to derive optimization potentials. Finally, the two potential raw material sources were comprehensively sampled and tested for processability via fractional analysis. The laboratory tests were carried out at the Chair for Mineral Processing at Montanuniversität Leoben as well as at the KAMIG laboratory in order to determine the mineralogical composition, the intergrowth conditions and the distribution of properties as a basis for successful separation of the valuable and the detrimental minerals. These analyses were complemented with actual separation tests.
