Abstract

Austria Metall AG, a leading producer of aluminium alloys for the further processing industry, produces high quality and specialized rolled products, cast alloys in the form of ingots or liquid aluminium and extrusion billets. They use hearth-type furnaces to remelt their secondary raw materials. Hereby the ramp of the furnace is a critical area due to the thermal, chemical and mechanical stress. Concerning to different parameters the ramp is exposed to increased abrasion, spalling, microstructural change, increased porosity and building up corundum of the refractories. The aim of this diploma thesis is to plan, design, start up and investigate the refractories for the Austria Metall AG. The experimental work should show the opportunity to test refractory materials against mechanical, thermal and chemical stress. With the results of the investigation, it should be possible to select resistant refractories for rhe ramp of the furnace.
