Abstract

The present thesis describes the development and engineering of a pilot plant for oil-water separation. The separation is done by means of the akvoFloat™ technology, a process patented by akvola Technologies. It is a combination of flotation and microfiltration through ceramic membranes. The pilot plant is to be designed for a water flow of 100 l/h. Additional prerequisites are a simple and compact design to facilitate transport, corrosion resistance and partial automation in operation. A first design concept included an overview of desired system functions, media flow paths and required components as well as the development of a process flow chart. Necessary properties and corrosion characteristics of instruments, machines, controls and tanks were specified in order to obtain suitable offers from manufacturers. With help of computer modelling, the spatial arrangement of components and pipe routing could be defined prior to assembling. The pilot plant will be tested at various sites of operation around the world in order to examine the performance of the akvoFloat™ process under real conditions. Practical experiments and pilot runs are expected to contribute to further development of the technology and to achieving market maturity.
