Abstract

Due to the growth strategy of the Doka GmbH in Amstetten, increasing capacity problems occurred in the decentralized raw material storage system in recent years. The aim of this master thesis is to analyze the delivery and storage processes in the Doka metal construction department. The focus has been laid on an examination of the pros and cons of a partially centralized storage system. An approach for reducing the capacity problems in the raw material storage area is developed, starting with the theoretical and practical basic techniques of material flow management and material flow analysis. Based on ABC- & XYZ-analysis and a Sankey diagram 414 different raw materials could be selected for a detailed analysis of the cost structure. The order-, takeover-, employed capital- and storage area costs were considered. This ultimately led to a clear picture of the cost structure in the shape of cost pools. Subsequently, the technical requirements for a new storage system with a partially centralized storage concept were collected and the market was explored for potential suppliers. A calculation of operational cost savings and the increased handling costs had to be created to make the different systems comparable. For the resulting production area reductions an evaluation concept has been developed which is based on the achieved EBIT per square meter. Process oriented improvements were recorded for zones where a transition to a centralized storage system was not practical. The results of an evaluation process are presented in a matrix and afterwards a cost-benefit analysis provides the basic information for the system of choice by the decision makers.
