Personal profile

Research interests

Physical and mechanical testing and characterisation of intact rock and rock masses; numerical modelling of rock fracture processes using Itasca (FLAC) and Rocscience software. These geomechanical techniques are used to link geological history of rocks with their current physical and mechanical properties. These techniques are applied to research for a variety of engineering purposes, including: TBM performance assessment, tunnel stability and intial support design, slope stability assessment, drilling performance assessment, geothermal and petroleum reservoir rock mass characterisation for development and utilisation. This requires working closely with geologists and engineers, and providing the link between the two disciplines.

Experience with geotechnical and geologic site characterizations, static and seismic slope stability analyses, tunnel excavation design, tunnel support and initial lining design, tunnel construction inspection, TBM excavation and performance assessment, and numerical modelling. Produced contract drawings, construction specifications, calculations, design reports, several technical memoranda and numerous research papers. PhD in rock mechanics titled Examination of Geological Influence on Machine Excavation of Deep Hard Rock Tunnels.
